In brief

A public house that opened in Northfield in December 1929. The Black Horse was built for Davenports. But by 2010 it was a JD Wetherspoon Free House, who had it refurbished.

The Black Horse - history

The Black Horse was opened on the 1st December 1929.

Designed for the Davenport Brewery, by Francis Goldsbrough (from the local architectural practice of Bateman and Bateman), this is one of the largest and finest examples of a Brewer’s Tudor-style public house in the country.

It was a replacement for the much smaller public house of the same name which had stood on the site and, in the 1870s, had been described as ‘a small, stone-built hostelry, with an estimated value of £250’.

It became a Grade II listed building in 1981.

JD Wetherspoon refurbished the pub in May 2010.

On completion of the renovation works, Wetherspoon's placed this black plaque at The Black Horse, with some of it's history.

Black Horse statue in the Beer Garden

There is a Black Horse sculpture in the beer garden of The Black Horse pub. It is visible over the fence from Frankley Beeches Road. And until 2020, from Sainsbury's Cafe (later renamed Fresh Kitchen). But Sainsbury's Cafe in Northfield has closed down (since 2021), while the Sainsbury's supermarket remains open.
